DANDELION ROOT: Dandelion root has been used for centuries in traditional medicine as a treatment for intestinal and liver problems. It is loaded with anti-oxidant vitamins such as vitamins A and C, as well as many necessary minerals. Dandelion root is still used today, and as studies continue, more benefits of the root are being found.  The root is used as a laxative, tonic and diuretic and also treats various liver and spleen ailments.  Dandelion Root is the principle herb used in formulas to purify the blood, kidney's and pancreas.

Dandelion contains bitter flavonoids that provide its diuretic properties.  These compounds are very important to the action of nearly all blood purifiers.  Besides increasing the flow of urine, these compounds relieve muscle spasms and reduce inflammation.  Dandelion contains inulin and mucilage which sooth the digestive tract, absorb toxins from ingested food and regulate the colonies of intestinal bacteria which produce toxins intended to kill other bacteria as a self preservation instinct.  To simplify - they help friendly flora thrive and inhibit unfriendly bacteria.

Perhaps the most important correlation of nutritional data for this herb is the abundance of minerals present in Dandelion.  Dandelion contains a very balanced mineral profile with generous quantities of the electrolytes, sodium and potassium. Dandelion is also high in Vitamin A in the form of beta-carotene.  Vitamin A is essential to the body and is stored in the liver.  Dandelion helps the liver release the vitamin A a provide a ready supply to the body.

Anti-cancer Benefits

A study in the May 2008 "International Journal of Oncology" reports that an extract from dandelion root blocked the invasion of breast cancer cells. Another study, evaluating the effects of dandelion root on skin tumors in mice, found that the root showed anti-tumor activity. This study was conducted by Japanese researchers at Kyoto Pharmaceutical University in Japan, and reported in a 1999 edition of "Biological and Pharmaceutical Bulletin." While these studies are promising, the National Institutes of Health states that more testing needs to be done with humans before recommending dandelion root as an anti-cancer agent.
